The exhibition by American experimental film-maker, Barbara Hammer, which took place as an accompanying programme to this year’ Mezipatra Film Festival, represents a selection of the artist’s work from the beginning of the 1970s. Barbara Hammer was one of the first film-makers in the United States to systematically focus on taboo themes related to the female body and lesbian sexuality. In the exhibit simply called Hammer! one can see her photographs, Superdyke (1975), Women I Love (1976), and Nitrate Kisses (1992). Today Barbara Hammer’s films belong to classic lesbian cinema and have earned world recognition not only for the open way that they describe female desire for women, but also for their experimental, non-linear form. Her photographs have been shown in important world galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Pompidou Centre and London’s Tate Modern. At the exhibition in the Fotograf Studio, Martina Uhlířová’s photographs and Veronika Neumanová’s and Helena Sequensová’s videos create an accompanying counterpart to the selected films.
