The Fotograf Contemporary platform has prepared an exhibition of the work of Libuše Jarcovjáková, one of the most outstanding contemporary Czech photographers, known at home and abroad for her authentic lifelong exploration of her own identity. The exhibition, entitled Fotografka (Photographer), will offer a new perspective on her photographic and book production and will bring closer her unique approach to photography. The exhibition, open at the Fotograf Gallery in Prague from 19 November to 20 December, will also present new, previously unexhibited colour analogue photographs from her long-term project Rooms and Beds. On this occasion, a special limited edition of images from this series will be available for purchase on the fotografcontemporary.cz platform.
Jarcovjáková’s photographs capture general themes: the street, night, relationships, work or moods. The rawness of the ordinary mixed with the poetry of the everyday, however, leaves the impression of a strong authorial statement about time and life. Jarcovjáková’s raw handwriting is characteristic, often in black and white analogue images.
The exhibition at Fotograf Gallery brings to light the way Libuše Jarcovjáková thinks about her work through a mutually inspiring collaboration with curator and publisher Lucie Černá. Under the wings of the Untitled publishing house, three successful books of Jarcovjáková’s photographs have been published together under the titles Evokativ, Supersonico and T-Club, which visually and content-wise reveal both known and hidden as well as new aspects of this original photographer’s work.
The exhibition Fotografka will present the colour series Rooms and Beds, as well as collaborative photographs created in collaboration with Lucie Černá from the books published so far, and also works within the gallery’s showroom. Jarcovjáková’s new colour analogue photographs continue the Rooms and Beds series, documenting the conceptual-documentary aspect of her work. In this project, she has been systematically recording the places where she sleeps since the early 1980s. „The photographer perceives space as a whole, the photographs on display show both the details of the rooms and the place of sleep itself. At the same time, it is important for Libuše not to focus only on a given situation. Thus, the series also includes photographs depicting situations preceding the arrival in the room. It’s like watching a short film showing a detail of the journey of someone who is about to go to sleep but is constantly interrupted by interesting details of the reality around them,“ explains the curator Lucie Černá.
Fotograf Contemporary is offering a selection of Libuše Jarcovjáková’s works for sale and is also releasing a limited edition of selected photographs from the Rooms and Beds series on this occasion. There are only one hundred pieces of the classic „limited edition“ chamber format available at a price for the wider public.
Fotograf Contemporary focuses on renowned names of the contemporary photographic scene, whose works are presented at selected shows and made available for sale. It is also an online platform with a diverse range of works for sale by the most interesting artists working with photography in the country.
